In the late 90s, Nickelodeon released a new show where a cajoined cat and dog went through various adventures. Is it possible that the creators were already in the grooming process where they were telling children - why bother identifying as a boy or girl, you can be both. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CatDog
