We found that putting a hard drive in a freezer for a couple hours often got it to work long enough to remove the critical data. No joke. Literally did this dozens of times... (Obviously this is for SPINNING drives, not solid state...)

Lol yeah that was the first thing we tried. Said to put it in the freezer until he got there.
