they automatically translate what you are saying into something else in their head, and ascribe hidden motives to what you say

I have experienced this first hand. Any time I say anything critical of the narrative, her mind begins searching for a away to equate what I'm saying as racism or women hating and so on. Once that is done, then the conversation is over.
