People fail to realize that “venom” is actually a cocktail of peptides, proteins and enzymes that need to work together in order to function. Each component is responsible for a different role or step in the type of envenomation at hand (hemotoxin, neurotoxin, etc.) Isolating these components from each other often times make them HARMLESS and can yield legitimate medical applications. For example, the Brazilian wandering spider’s venom is infamous in causing priapism (permanent erections that actually makes people infertile) through a poorly understood serotonin pathway. Research is being done by isolating its components in order to create cures for different types of erectile dysfunction. Just because it is derived from venom doesn’t make it a bad thing.
