I think the crux of the matter is that as long as people have the freedom to quit and find another job, the market will take care of wages. If you don't think $5 per hour is good enough, then quit and get another job. Nobody is forcing you to do anything you don't want to do.
When the government imposes a minimum wage it distorts the job marketplace. Entry level jobs that require no skills of any kind are no longer available to the barely employable.
