I've seen first hand that change of culture in big business.
I first started working in IT (comms, infrastructure, telephony etc) in the mid 1990's. I've seen the industry change from chasing competence and excellence, to chasing the right kind of politics.
I've seen the highly experienced and extremely capable people leave the industry while the incompetent, yet politically correct, replace them. Hell, I myself left big companies and I'll never work for them again.
Diversity is just a code word for the dumbing down of the workforce.
I was recently speaking with some of the Staff still at my last big business employer (I left about 8 years ago). As a parting comment, I said to say hi to anyone there who still might remember me. I was shocked when I was told that everyone there remembers me, even the people I've never met. That they would be ecstatic to hear that I'm still in touch with the old Staff.
It turns out they all still use my documentation and follow the procedures that I wrote 10+ years ago. Those procedures should be obsolete by now. The systems I wrote them for should have been replaced by now! WTF?!?
It turns out the level of complexity/interoperability and the mission critical status of many of the connected systems means that the company has lost the ability to upgrade or change those systems. They tried with 4 different contractors, but they couldn't work out the internal complexity of the systems (or in a lot of cases, the internal politics of the organisation) and the upgrades failed so they had to roll back each time.
This is happening in every large organisation where I still have contacts. Competent people leaving, being replaced by diversity hires who can't do the work, so management just patch it up as best they can. Management refusing to listen to the few remaining people who know what they're talking about, so the good people give up, stay silent, and just do the absolute minimum to keep their jobs.
We absolutely must return to a merit and competence based society and discard this flawed and failed diversity model.
