With the lesser availability of baby formula (junk food, poor nourishment), probably a lot of mothers are scrambling to find something else. First, I had forgotten but mothers CAN restart or start their own milk supply. Look for restarting breastfeeding, inducing lactation, re-lactation on youtube.
Secondly, ThePatriotNurse has an excellent video on this subject found here, sorry for the youtube link, couldn’t find another.
Third, one of my go-to sites for stellar nutritional information-- (www.westonaprice.org)--recommends two books that are FREE and downloadable, The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby and Child Care and Nourishing Traditions. They can be found here and here.
My babies are all grown now but I wanted to say that the Nourishing Traditions cookbook is wonderful- it has far more than recipes for baby formula. I had no clue it was available for download! I'm on my second hard copy of it having worn out the original I bought years ago. It teaches you how to cook real food with traditional methods and is full of tons of little tidbits of info about traditional food, etc. I would recommend it to anyone.
I won't lie and say that I was able to feed my family exclusively in the Nourishing Traditions way when bringing up our kids, but we did always try to eat real whole foods- I baked, we raised a garden and had dairy goats and chickens when our kids were young, etc. But some of my kids' favorite recipes from childhood came from that cookbook.
Another good cookbook that utilizes whole foods would be "Whole Foods for the Whole Family" by Roberta Bishop Johnson and put out by La Leche League in the early 80s. Some of the nutrition info in it is dated but the ingredients are all real, whole foods. The book is getting hard to find and can be relatively expensive but it's worth it.
Yes, it's so full of great information. I knew nothing about that when I raised my kids....LOL!
