This technology is not new. In fact, it has been around for almost 10 years. I advised the regulatory pathway for FDA's approval of Otsuka's MyCite the line extension for Abilify (aripiprazole) used to treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, Tourette's syndrome. MyCite has an ingestible event monitor (IEM) compressed with the tablet which is ingested. As the tablet disintegrates in stomach fluid the IEM comes into contact with the liquid, activating a "battery" which sends a signal to a patch worn on the wrist of the patient. The patch sends a signal to a cloud-based database which is accessible by the patient's physician who can then monitor his patient's compliance with the treatment protocol. Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, Tourette's syndrome patients are notoriously noncompliant with treatment regimens, and this in part overcomes that.
Bourla adapting this tech to his CV-19 tablet for monitoring purposes is something which can be defeated simply by dropping the pill + IEM into water, having the cloud signalling patch close by and letting it send its signal to whatever database collects it. Bourla is just jacking off here.
