Also, can a mod explain why this shows up right-side-up on the preview screen but knocked over after upload?

Not a mod but I can show you what's wrong:

Presumably, you took the photo with a phone, not a proper camera. For some reason, your phone thought it was horizontal (left image) and set the EXIF data as "landscape" instead of "portrait".

This is easy to fix on a computer simply by rotating and saving the image. I don't know if that can be done by editing on your phone.

I don't know why the preview screen was different.
