white oak? Be careful for oak wilt ...

You can use white latex caulk, less harmful and messy....and protects all the same....and won't be ugly for more than one season.

Ash trees...you really don't need to do anything, most trees heal by themselves....

...surprised they have survived the emerald ash borer beetle which have decimated the ash tree population in the midwest.

The latex caulk was recommended to me by an arborist....latex comes from many trees, and is the closest man-made stuff to protect a tree, and will fall off in a season after the tree has repaired itself.
