I think that was the point, protest the war ostensibly but by attacking the secondary victims of the war, the drafted 19yr olds forced to fight it. This lets the authors of the war off the hook, and simultaneously discredits the anti-war sentiment in the eyes of the normies of the time. It also takes the spotlight off the reasoned opponents to the war, like professors and their serious students who were more correctly pointing the blame at the MIC, and corrupt dynastic political families.
The lead hippies were largely the children of high ranking MIC people and the corrupt dynastic families... certainly the musicians canonised at the time were.
