I remember this caller was really afraid of him and she sounded believable. I had no reason to doubt her; she even thanked me for believing her. Now I wonder if that young lady is still alive.

It sounds believable to me. Mental illness doesn't just "go away" so their assertion that he's cured and no longer a threat really just sounds like bullshit to me.
