As someone who has pirated a lot of software… spyware and malware are real. I’ve downloaded lots of files that were fake and triggered my malware scanner. But what you said after is great advice.
I have my documents folder backed up to cloud, and only work out of that folder so it’s all synced continuously. You can add a 2nd cloud backup as well.
Malwarebytes is a free too for pc to scan your system.
I use Dropbox for cloud storage.
So I don't think I actually had virus. I think the bs smartcast type app spez: from the microsoft store i tried to test out put some nefarious stuff giving me notifications saying i was infected hoping id click their mcafee link.. that I managed to find and delete. (one of the things was a program called "Disneys Magic Kingdom" KEK) and I haven't had one of the popup for a couple hours now so i think i got whatever it was. But I definitely appreciate the input from everyone. I've had my tablet for yeas now and never felt the need to do any of this before but I definitely want to protect it now because of this scare.
I use Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware on other's computers when they have a problem and don't want to pay a shop.
I never use pirated software. I find open source free software for as many things as possible, and I buy the other software I rely on the most.
I do have a number of websites, so I can hide files down in the directory structure locked up. So that's my personal 'cloud.' I put necessary documents there, but not any sensitive ones.
Anti-virus software is a scam. I don't use it, and never have. I've also never had a virus.
I practice safe computing. I don't go to porn sites. I don't double-click on email attachments. I don't automatically preview emails.
Besides that, keep a recovery disk for your computer. Backup often and keep an extra backup offsite, perhaps at a friend's house.
This.
