Not really directly related to any current events, but I was wondering how much the federal government was raking in on gasoline tax. From the government site:
federal gas tax is 18.4 cents/gal:
https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=10&t=5
we consumed 135 billion gallons of gasoline in the US last year:
https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=23&t=10
Some simple math:
0.184 * 135 = 24.84 billion dollars in federal gasoline tax last year.
I've always wanted someone to ask the politicians when they say they need an infrastructure bill for bridges and roads, which I assume will mean they want to raise taxes, "where did all the federal gas tax money go?". Tell them "You don't need any more money. If you're going to raise taxes to pay for bridges and roads then remove the federal gas tax.".
Federal gas tax is insane, they take our money, take their cut and give some back to the states to build roads.
I don't think the federal government needs to give any to the state. There's also state gas tax. And in most cases that is higher than the federal gas tax.

I was going to say, of course California is leading the way with the highest rate, but Pennsylvania seems to have the highest. Was a bit surprised by that. Seems the people of PA are really bad at voting and/or there's a ton of election fraud going on in PA.
