likely there is a set limit in the system that hasn't been updated, 100 might have seemed excessive 2 years ago. Now it can be hit pretty easily. Just let the clerk know inside that they need to change the limit.
This is most likely the correct answer. Alot of Gas Stations had a limit on the amount you could purchase with one swipe. As was mentioned above $100 may have seen excessive before, as we can see from the picture it's only 18 gals now at the Biden prices.
It's a limit imposed by the franchises for credit card transactions. For some time I was a network engineer for one of the majors US retail division. Here's how it works: let's says it's a Valero station. Velero doesn't actually own the station, it's a franchise but they do process the credit card transaction. In the case of Valero, they (Velero) are responsible for the first $74 of any credit card transaction. The franchise is responsible for any amount higher. Most franchises will cut off at the majors limit. If for any reason the cc transaction is later declined, the franchise doesn't lose money. This could be a case say if the sat link to the major is down and cc transactions can't be validated, the local POS will authorize the transaction, up to cut off amount.
Good info ty
You can just start over and continue to fill up. All of our gas stations do this too... They are limiting how much we get. This headline is inaccurate...
Yeah, this is BS. A lot of stations set limits on gasoline purchases, and have for years. It's annoying, but not proof of rationing.
I've heard people with big trucks complaining about this $100 limit back during Obama.
Gas is one of the few commodities where you don't know the final price until you finish pumping. The most the small pumps can do is get an authorization for $1.00; customer pumps gas. If the customer exceeds their limit after the pumping finishes, they've already got their gas, and there is a delay on the small pump for recovery of the cost of the transaction. If the customer has gone over their limit, they're hit with fees, etc, but there is a delay before the gas station is fully reimbursed.
One station near me is limited to 75$. It's not a set thing they just don't want people filling huge spare tanks. But the number should really will have to go up with gas prices.
This isn't really rationing gas, it's just a limit that already existed that hasn't been updated since $100 actually because a normal amount to pay at the pump.
It probably has a lot to do with credit cards.
Yeah, $75 was the limit here in TX back in 2008-2009 when the gas prices were stupid.
