People think of WWW as "the internet." But there's a lot more to the internet, such as usenet, gopher, ftp, telnet, etc. I used those before the WWW started. My first use of the WWW was in a black and white text only browser called Lynx (links, get it). It didn't even support using a mouse. You would tab to move from link to link and hit enter to visit the link or download the associated file.
