It sounds like you've been bamboozled by Dispensationalism, which is what nearly all of the 501(c)3 churches teach these days.
The beast is legion, which means many persons making up one identity. The number of persons making up the beast is 6 times 6 times 6, which means not 216, but "a really big number" of evil people.
Just like Jesus saying to forgive 7 times 7 times means "a really big good number" of times.
