My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning. — Psalm 130:6

There are times that we find ourselves watching in the middle of the night. I can think back to several occasions in my life where my family was left waiting in the night. It could have been sickness, tragic events, or other situations. It may have been a direct family member or a close friend. Sometimes it is waiting in the night for you yourself.

As the psalmist writes here, it is describing someone that is looking for the night to end. The person is actively looking for the end to the night. It is an intent and anxious waiting that the person is doing. I know of many families that have described that same feeling from time waiting in the hospital, for test results, or a diagnosis.

Others have described that feeling when they were facing financial difficulty, problems with children, and many other situations in life. The truth of the matter is that night can present itself in a variety of forms in our lives, leaving us watching earnestly for the end of the night.

When we find ourselves in one of these situations, how we approach it matters. In the verse just before, the psalmist described waiting but also hoping in God’s word. So many times we look for answers and relief from our situations in the words of doctors, leaders, or friends. Our hope and the true help for our night is not found there, but in God’s word. The psalmist was hoping in God’s word and earnestly waiting for God to intervene in the situation.

Maybe you have found yourself in the middle of a night spiritually right now. Perhaps you have found yourself in the middle of a night literally, waiting in a situation. Don’t lose hope! God has said in His word that He cares and is working in our lives. Sometimes waiting is hard, but when it comes to God, He is always worth the wait.
