What exactly are they doing? The research I mean. Why do they need an endless supply of baby parts?

The reason given is stem cell research. Basically, stem cells are a type of cell that can become any kind of cell - a bone cell, a muscle cell, a nervous tissue cell, etc.

Effectively, they can play god.
