I've been avoiding it due to the woke-turn moves have taken in the last 5-10 years. I did like Top Gun, but can any anons say if it's really good (no woke+great movie), soso (some woke+not great) or woke( woke + bad story)?
Just saw it last night and it’s really enjoyable. The flying scenes are incredible. The woke stuff is minimal. One of the dozen young aviators is female, but it’s not obnoxious feminism. Besides, I’ve heard that women’s low center of gravity can help them withstand G forces, so it makes more sense for them to be pilots/ aviators than hand-to-hand commandos throwing around big dudes. The team is multi racial with whites, blacks, latins, and at least one asian. None of them act “woke” and are all likable as young and competitive loyal members of the Navy.
Besides the international enemies of the mission, the antagonists are the Navy admirals who have a different vision of the future of the Navy and the mission. Ed Harris wants to replace manned flight with drones, so he wants to phase out old aviators such as Maverick. Jon Hamm wants to reduce the parameters of the mission so that the aviators would have an easier opportunity to complete the first two phases, but would become more likely to be shot down afterwards. It’s up to Maverick not to let them get sacrificed. So the political struggle is personal rather than ideological.
It's just landed on my to-watch list thanks to your review, anon.
Try and watch it in D Box or the seats that move. Well worth the extra bucks.
As above Anon says, yeah, there are various races and a female pilot but their race or gender never come into question or become a plot point.
