Some are depicting the Universe, but in ancient times many thought the Earth WAS the Universe. So there was no word for Terra versus Cosmos. They were the same, so when you translate them, assumptions are made and the symbolism falls apart.
I don't think this is meant to be taken literally, but symbolically.
