Is a "trans woman" a man trying to be a woman, or a woman trying to be a man? Am I the only one who gets confused about that?

Follow up question. If we assume that a "trans woman" is a man trying to be a woman, are two trans women who are together a couple of gay guys, or a couple of lesbians?

I KNOW I'm not the only one confused about that one.
