It doesn't. It is just used to muddy the waters to make people that are looking for a moral/ethical way to justify it to themselves.
Just like the "clump of cells" argument they use. Point out that everything is essentially a clump of cells, including them and they will - without fail - agree and nod their head knowingly before moving on to their next argument. They know it is BS, but they will use whatever excuse/reason they can to justify what they want.
