This is what I think, because I've seen such situations. Single mother has kid, guy shows up and showers her with attention, promises he's Prince Charming and she's his dream princess. He moves in and she gets dependent. Whatever he does next, she will defend him until beaten over the head with the truth. It doesn't help that he's illegal, in fact he can use that to say she must defend him or he'll be deported.
