This. It's a good indication, but it isn't proof.

Snopes could say the Sun will rise tomorrow and you would then believe it won't.

Not necessarily. Sometimes they tell the truth when it benefits them.
So we can't really use their reporting to determine anything about the truth of an issue or the falseness of one.
I agree that whatever they say should be held up to scrutiny and not accepted blindly as fact.
