Because saying it in essence makes it real. I get it. It is human nature.
Think about a relationship where you know something is up in your gut, but it takes your brain awhile to get there. Maybe the other person is cheating, or maybe you just get the feeling that they want to break up, but you don't, so you just pretend 'everything is fine'. But you know in your gut it's not and that is painful to face. It is kind of the same thing. Once the brain catches up - either by force (the other person leaves you) or you confront the issue to determine your gut was right - then most people start to deal with it. Some deal better than others. I think the same thing is happening now.
