For future reference: Anytime you see a mob running in one direction,step aside and look for an exit away from the mob, either in the opposite direction or perpendicular to it. No. 1 rule of survival, AVOID CROWDS. Especially if that crowd is screaming and in a panic.... at the very least, you may get trampled. At the very worst, you may get dead.
