The above chart shows a clear numerical advantage for China, however that does not tell the full story. Taiwan only has one potential enemy and has a relatively small territory to defend with no land borders. They can concentrate 100 percent of their resources against China.
China, on the other hand, shares long land borders with potentially hostile neighbors who must be constantly defended against. They have a restless population, overstretched economy and are entering a period when nature can consume considerable resources. Their nuclear weapons are useless against Taiwan and if they get bogged down, neighbors such as Vietnam and India might decide to take advantage. If they start a war, they better make it quick and decisive. They have much more to lose than to gain.
