What I don't understand is this:

Anne Heche sat up in that ambulance gurney and you can see that her tan tank top is still on, her hair is intact, her skin is not black, nor red, and it appears that she is not burned terribly as you might expect. She was reported to be conversing with the rescue personnel and was awake and coherent when they removed her from the vehicle and took her to the ER. But now they say she is in a coma! None of this is making sense.

I found these statements:

"LAFD said the driver was conscious and able to speak with firefighters while being treated before being taken to the trauma center."

"Anne Heche Is in a Coma After Fiery Car Crash, Remains on Ventilator for ‘Significant Pulmonary Injury'"

"... she has severe burns and has a long road ahead of recovery..."

“At this time she is in extreme critical condition she has a significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention,”

“She is in a coma and has not regained consciousness since shortly after the accident.”
