At least the huge wind farm down the road from me was just open farmland. Although a lot of the land is unusable for farming, because each windmill has a separate outbuilding, parking lot, and driveway. Here's an article about it, although it's terribly outdated. It says 104 windmills, but you can look at Google Maps satellite view and count 150 or more.
