Maybe the girl's mother dreamed of her daughter enjoying homecoming as it was a highlight of her own teenage years, and father and daughter chose to honor her by attending.

Well said. Agree with you. We don't know the circumstances. It could have been the mom's wish. Some deaths are long time coming and planning occurs.
