My own father (English) volunteered at age 19 at the start of WW2. He wanted to be a pilot but ended up as a rear gunner. After 6 months his 'plane was shot down. Thankfully, by some miracle, he survived and was taken prisoner then marched between POW camps for the next 4.5 years until the Yanks (thanks) liberated him.

His ordeal remained on his mind until he died, age 80, but I don't know if he ever realised how futile war is, regardless of which side you are on.
