It was my personal experience that when I went on the Atkins diet, I dropped tons of weight and my blood lipids dropped from elevated to normal. I can only speak for myself though.
Based on what I understand of biochemistry it is largely insulin which drives fat storage. Carbohydrate rich foods spike insulin levels. Insulin drives fat storage and prevents fat burning. Eating carbs = inability to shed weight.
