This actually happened during WWII - when France was occupied a lot of French said the same thing. Part of it was trying to distance themselves on what to going on around them & live “normal”. It didn’t help them one bit & caused animosity with their neighbors & the Germans didn’t GAF what they thought . Sheep then sheep now.
