I know far more about explosives than I do directed energy weapons and can say there were no signs of a chemical based detonation - particularly orange or brown-orange smoke associated with all chemical-based explosions. Every explosion leaves residue which can be identified with a gas chromatagraph right in the field.

You are correct about trees exploding from water inside. But other things explode too when hit. Stones, not so much, but it would depend on water content (low) and energy levels.

Also not discounting something like a mini-Rod of God. But you're right, we will never know the truth.
