For all the buckets and buckets of bullets, mags and firearms that preppers seem to love having, The average American in a SHTF situation is VASTLY more likely to starve to death than they are to ever fire a single shot in anger.
An affordable rifle, pistol and shotgun can accomplish everything that any man could ever need to accomplish in this world that would require a firearm. 3 guns. Anything else is just showing off.
Store food. Store ALOT of food.
Maybe, who knows for sure? Most who are... 2nd amendment enthusiasts .. have lots of bang things for trade also. And they don't lose value or expire.
I think we're in for either a controlled collapse like Argentina/ urban California. Or real shtf for a short period, then the white hats flip everything and we rebuild the 10 or 20% of infrastructure we lost.
Think about it this way. Something like 40% of Americans report owning guns. Maybe the real number is something closer to 50%? Cool. That's a good thing!
What % of Americans do you think have more than a month worth of shelf stable food for their family in their home? I guarantee you that it's vastly less than 40% of American homes. Every American should have at least a years worth of shelf stable food stored for emergencies. It's not as sexy as a new ACOG to show off on Facebook while punching paper in a "Sheep Dog" tee shirt. But it's vastly more important.
We're agreed on one level, being prepared with food and the ability to defend ourselves is good. Going overboard in one area is wasteful when you ignore others. So a second gat isn't a priority til you have a month of temp stable food.
What I'm saying is to focus your planning with probable scenarios so people reading our advice will not miss 50% of prepping, mindset. So after you have one 2a sporting good and a bucket of freeze dried chili Mac you also do things like decide if stored water is what you need or a filter? Both would be great. Do you have a jacuzzi? Pool? Hot water heater or hot on demand? Have you met your neighbors? What are they like and how much are they prepared? Do you have a dog? Do you have a generator? How loud is it? Do you have tools? Building materials? Reliable transportation? How loud is that? The list can be endless so figuring out what you need to prep for is just as important as the preps themselves.
