You are 100% correct (as far as I believe).

This "controlled demolition" is literally like a chess game. You make your move. They make theirs. You may have a gameplan, and you may know their gameplan, even well enough that you already know you have checkmate coming up. But they still get to make moves, and this evil enemy will THRASH and CLAW until they are fully defeated.

The precipice is going to look horrifying, but military is the only way.
