And it can be true that, as a satirist, all current topics of his day were grist to Baum's mill. That is the point of most satire. But these conclusions were drawn by others and are not necessary to enjoy the books now. The enduring entertainment value and moral lessons of the stories is what gives them value as literature, not what others have speculated about the author's economic opinions.
