Something seems off about this. I know Ian was an ugly storm, but Floridians know to either get out of dodge or batten up and hang in there. Most of the deaths are people who don't know how to prepare or are pulling some Florida-man style stupidity.
Google tells me that the death toll for Hurricane Michael (a comparable storm in strength and speed) was 74.
I’ll tell you what is off. I encountered it, personally, and saw it posted in multiple places (including on this site):
There was a concerted effort to spread the narrative that the media was over-hyping this storm for the sake of ratings. Lots and lots of posts like this, on every forum (including Fakebook and Dreaddit.)
Mike of Mike’s Weather Page was the one who called it and who was astounded that it was being downplayed. He was criticized for hyping it up, and he was dead-on.
I listened to a renowned forecaster downplay this storm to the point that I believe they should lose their job and be held accountable.
Hurricane Roulette is a dangerous game and one that is only won by not playing. I have evacuated or made extensive preparations many times when nothing happened; but never regret not being caught off-guard.
