"My religious beliefs teach me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time of my death. I do not concern myself with that, but to be always ready whenever it may overtake me. That is the way all men should live, and all men would be equally brave."
- Stonewall Jackson, July 24th 1861 to Captain Imboden following the victory of the First Brigade at the Battle of the First Manassas/First Bull Run and the wounding of his hand on July 21st, 1861
Did you know that he was a very religious man? Here's his statue at the Manassas Battlefield. He got his nickname there for standing firm "like a stone wall." https://images.fineartamerica.com/images/artworkimages/mediumlarge/3/stonewall-jackson-statue-manassas-national-battlefield-john-trommer.jpg
I visited their in the 80s I was surprised I never heard of the battle, but I had heard of bull run. The north/south has different names for the battles and different text books I assume.
It's so funny to read things from centuries ago, it makes you wonder if we aren't digressing as a society rather than progressing. People spoke so much more eloquently and of quality content.
