$800 junkyard engine (if it is good, check the mileage) sounds OK
$500 labor sounds like a bargain (I have personally done engine swaps many years ago) IMO pain in the ass.
The two most expensive things on a vehicle are usually the engine and the transmission.
I believe I’ve got a trustworthy guy working on finding me an engine and you’re right, it’s a big pain in the ass!
Would not hurt to get a compression check.
This will tell you a lot.
IMO clean oil is a red flag. This means something was wrong with it and the previous owner thought an oil change would fix it.
