Contrails are ice. Their thickness and rate of spread depends on conditions high in the air where they are. Sometimes they disappear quickly if the air is relatively hot and dry. Sometimes they are thicker when there is more moisture. They can hang around and spread if the air pressure below them is relatively high and holds up the falling crystals. These look like fighter jet trails to me, with the planes out of sight on the left.
