I taught a college graduate course in the late '90s, comprised of a mix of undergraduates and young graduate students, and by then, students largely didn't know how to do actual research in a library! I can't even imagine how far downhill academia has slided (or should it be slid?; not an English major :) ) since then.
Those sayings were the equivalent of calling everything a conspiracy theory.
