So why didn't they just do something smart, like let the Chinese pay them and hand them some bullshit for them to waste their time with?

Seriously? Is there comms or something? Or a deeper meaning to all this? Because otherwise this is a fucking nothing burger. This is like taking a giant shit and instead of wiping your ass and flushing it all down you instead make a fucking Facebook post about it.
