Further to Ashlandog's succinct explanation, a dirty bomb is not for causing a nuclear explosion, but rather for spreading dangerous radioactive dust/particles in order to kill people.

It is analogous to people who don't wash their hands after taking a dump, then they use the Dyson air dryer to spread their filth!
