Yes, many, if not most, of the slave ships were owned by those people. And the slaves were captured and put into slavery by their own people. And then farmers need some farm help and didn't have enough cash to pay salaries to add to their workforce, so they bought some help and then had to feed, clothe, and shelter them for the rest of their lives.
