Seriously don't see that happening for multiple reasons. Back in 1992 Ross Perot ran as an independent. He was pretty popular, more popular than Bush 41 IMO, but it split the Republican vote and ala Bill Clinton. There are people out there that will vote Republican because they always have and always will. Same with a lot of Democrat voters. They vote party, not so much the candidate.
When we all thought Trump would run prior to 2016 my biggest concern was him running independent. Because I don't think he would have won. But fortunately, he believes the Republican party can be saved, with substantial cleansing of course.
