I personally think that "they" thought trump was "their guy" just like romney, mccain, bush, etc, were. The controlled opposition. Trump was always buddy buddy with the DC elite and they thought he'd play along as needed if he won by accident just like bush did...but he didn't. Gore was supposed to win that election.
