Whhhhaaaaat? I wonder what happened! Something bad is to happen, needs to play out, and it’s out of his control? So, give safe speech?

Everyone keeps writing that he was somber. I didn’t grasp that, but then again, I was kind of working and talking on the phone while he was speaking.
