There is ample evidence of this. They used the Olympic because she was not really seaworthy after an accident (If I recall correctly?). I believe the DS used this as a way to sink her to not only get rid of a major expensive headache, but to also get rid of Astor so he couldn't prevent the federal reserve from coming into being.
